More than 3000 people attended the Vu Lan Festival at Quang Minh Buddhist Temple on Sunday August 24, 2008.

As a major event influenced by Buddhism, Vu Lan festival is the Vietnamese transliteration for Ullambana.

This festival is also considered as the Vietnamese Mother's Day. People with living mothers express gratitude towards their mothers, while people whose mothers have passed away pray for their souls. This festival is the chance for pardoning guilty ghosts which are homeless and not being taken care of.

The origin Sanskrit name of Ullambana appears in early Buddhist holy writings known as sutras. These stories tell how Sariputra and Mandgalyayana, the two principal disciples of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, saved their mothers from needless suffering after death.
